Belton House is a pretty stately home in Lincolnshire, England with superb gardens and parkland. It’s seen an increase in visitors since it was used for filming as the home of Queen Charlotte in the Netflix TV series. There’s lots to see and do here and it has a huge adventure playground for kids.

Belton House was the home of the wealthy Brownlow family and it was completed in 1687. It remained in the family until 1984 and was well maintained throughout the 300 years that the family held it. A such, what you see today is a brilliant example of an English country house. When you enter the house, many of the contents you see were donated by the family and it feels very ‘homely’. Most of the large rooms are open to the public and we enjoyed looking out of the huge sash windows at the deer outside. For us, it’s the exterior areas which hold the most interest at this property.

The gardens are gorgeous and at the heart of the formal garden is a stunning Orangery (pictured at the top of the page). This was used extensively in the filming of Queen Charlotte as this was her preferred place to spend time. There is a small church on the estate just behind the Orangery. The wider gardens include a boating lake, follies and wooded areas. There’s a lot to enjoy! On top of that, there are two large courtyards with stables and outbuildings to see which have now been converted into a cafe, shops and indoor soft play area. Across the entrance road is a large adventure playground with its own ride-on railway. Our little boy loved the ride, but was a bit scared of the huge twisty slide.
One other thing to note about this site is that the estate has a significant history from the world wars. In the first world war, the grounds were used as an army encampment and in the second world war, an airfield was constructed on the site and operated as RAF Belton Park.

Belton House is open all year round and has special events at times including an lovely Christmas light trail. Standard adult admission is £20 (2025 prices) but is free for National Trust members.
