The Funicolare Como-Brunate is a historic funicular railway which connects the city of Como with the village of Brunate in Italy. It’s a popular way to enjoy scenic views of Como and on hot days, the air is cooler on top of the hill. We thought the views were incredible and enjoyed seeing the Alps in the distance too.

The base station is a small walk around the edge of the lake in Como. The journey takes about seven minutes, and the funicular operates on a regular schedule, typically from morning until late evening. Bear in mind that you will be crammed inside when the funicular is busy. It was a somewhat uncomfortable, but this keeps the queues as short as possible. The station at the top (pictured above) gives access to terraced areas with lovely views. Although the railway, stations and cars have been updated, this funicular route actually dates back to 1894.

When you get to the top, it soon becomes clear why this funicular has survived for over 125 years. We spent quite some time studying the view. In the foreground, you can easily pick out individual buildings in Como. The Duomo dome really stands out and makes it easy to work out what the buildings are around it. You can also see miles into the distance and a small amount of the rest of Lake Como. Not quite enough to make out Villa del Balbianello though, our favourite villa on the lake.

The Como-Brunate Funicular costs 3.60 Euros one-way and 7.20 Euros for a return ticket (2025 prices).
