North Norfolk Railway

The North Norfolk Railway is a heritage railway line linking Sheringham and Holt in Norfolk, England. It’s renowned for the stunning coastal scenery you see as you journey along the 5 mile route known as the ‘Poppy Line’. Most of the services are hauled by steam locomotives, but some heritage diesels are used too.

Most people start their journey in the seaside town of Sheringham and the Victorian station here is lovely. It’s large and well maintained and the volunteers who run the line have added lots of period features which take you back in time. We loved the trolleys with old suitcases, the vintage advertising signs and the chalk boards with announcements and train times. In the summer, there are lots of hanging baskets and planters with flowers too.

There are lots of things we loved about our experience on this railway. One of the biggest positives is simply that it goes to somewhere worth going to! So many heritage railway lines don’t. Holt is a beautiful Georgian town with quaint shops, trendy cafes and historic buildings. There’s a lot to enjoy about visiting although it is a half hour walk from the station. We enjoyed the stroll, but if that’s not for you, at peak times a bus service is in operation to take you quickly into the town centre.

The other big highlight is how picturesque the route is. It’s mainly coastal until you get close to Holt. The 19th Century poet Clement Scott declared the countryside around Sheringham to be ‘Poppyland’ and the term stuck. There are still poppies in abundance here at the right time of year. The rest of the time, you look out of your window at attractive fields, the sea and the odd golf course.
