Plas Newydd House, Anglesey

Plas Newydd is an attractive Grade 1 listed house and garden positioned on the banks of the Menai Strait in Anglesey, Wales. It’s a great place to head for fantastic views of the boats and bridges on the Strait, but also to catch a glimpse of the rare UK red squirrel.

The first thing that strikes you when you visit Plas Newydd is the location it’s set in. Whilst we enjoyed entering the house, it was the garden and parkland we will remember. In fact, even when you’re in the house you’re drawn to the large windows offering great views of the Menai Strait. We imagined that if we lived here, we would spend all our time looking out of the windows! It was the Paget family who originally lived here. William Paget, who was born around 1505 actually built it. He was employed by King Henry VIII as Secretary of State. Future generations updated and modernised the property and it was lived in as a family home until the 1970s. This gives it a homely feel when you step inside.

The Grade I listed landscape consists of 40 acres of garden and 129 acres of woodland and parkland. The parts nearest the house are attractive and formal, but the land becomes a more natural parkland as you move further away from it. There is a Rhododendron garden and children’s play area too. The big highlight for us though was the chance to spot a red squirrel. This is one of the small handful of places left in the UK where you can see them. It took an hour or so, but eventually, one darted across the grass in front of us. It was the first time anyone in our party had seen one and we will remember Plas Newydd fondly for that.

Plas Newydd is open from early spring to late autumn each year. Adult admission is £11 (2025 prices) but is free for National Trust members.
