Upper & Lower Barrakka Gardens

In the Maltese capital Valletta, there are two landscaped garden areas which go hand-in-hand. Upper Barrakka Gardens and Lower Barrakka Gardens are visible from each other and both are worth visiting to enjoy the garden sculptures, impressive structures and stunning views.

In the image above, which we took at Upper Barrakka Gardens, you can clearly make out the trees of the Lower Barrakka Gardens further down the street. Although the two gardens share similar views, there are lots of unique features in each. Probably the most significant difference is the view of the Saluting Battery (pictured above) at Upper Barrakka. Crowds gather at noon each day to lean over the fence and watch the firing of the cannon. You can head down the stairs in the garden and pay to visit the Saluting Battery itself for an even better view and to learn about the battery’s history and weapons.

Upper Barrakka Gardens are dominated by two sets of huge arches which date back to 1661. They used to have a roof sitting on them, but this was later removed. Much of the edges of the garden are dedicated to walkways which allow you to enjoy the views, whilst the interior has sparse planting, benches, a cafe and garden features. These gardens are very old, having been established in the 1560s to offer an escape to the Knights of St John, who used to control Malta.

Of the two gardens, we actually preferred the lower ones. Although they’re smaller they’re also less busy and we thought the planting is more attractive. Looking out over the water you can see Fort Ricasoli, Fort St Angelo and the Magisterial Palace. There are plenty of benches to sit on and enjoy the view, but the garden is packed with interesting features too. The most striking monument is the huge one dedicated to Sir Alexander Ball who was a British admiral. The monument resembles an ancient Greek temple and was constructed in 1810 after his death. Much of what is around the monument is significantly older, dating back to the 17th century. The arched area was built to resemble the arches at the Upper Barrakka Gardens.

Upper Barrakka Gardens and Lower Barrakka Gardens are free to enter. They both open at 7am each day and close at 10pm. There’s a different feel in both gardens at night and we’d recommend a visit to look at the lights of Valletta.
